The Dutch name for this area is De Wallen. In English its called Red Light District because of the red lights surrounding the windows of the rooms of the prostitutes. The Red light district also boasts some of the oldest canals, bridges and authentic houses in Amsterdam. The neighbourhood is mainly a network of small streets and alleys, filled with coffeeshops and bars. A lot of cheap Asian restaurants are situated on the Zeedijk, in Amsterdam’s Chinatown.
